Year 1
Welcome to Year 1!
We’re excited to welcome you and your child to an exciting year of learning, discovery, and creativity in Year 1.
Throughout the year, children will explore a wide range of engaging texts in English, brought to life through drama, SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar), and writing sessions. They will continue to build on their phonics knowledge, which supports both reading fluency and spelling confidence.
In Maths, the focus is on deepening their understanding of numbers up to 100, as well as exploring shape, space, and measurement. These concepts are applied through hands-on problem-solving and reasoning activities to develop strong mathematical thinking.
Science is full of investigation and curiosity. Children will explore materials and their properties, and discover what plants need to grow and thrive.
In History, we delve into exciting topics such as The History of Our School, Toys Through Time, and The Seaside Then and Now, helping children make meaningful comparisons with the present day.
Geography takes us on a global adventure! Children will learn about The Countries of the UK, Human and Physical Features (including a focus on Japan), and how to use maps and follow routes.
In Computing, children will begin to learn coding using Beebots and other digital tools. They will also explore a variety of programmes to develop their digital literacy and confidence with technology.
To enrich the children’s learning, we have a variety of exciting workshops and trips planned throughout the year. This Autumn, the children will take part in a Discover Your Body workshop led by the drama group Perform, and visit the Rural Life Centre to bring their learning to life. In the Spring term, they will explore the past with trips to Milestones Museum and Haslemere Museum. In the Summer, a visit to Wisley will support their Science work on plants, and a trip to Littlehampton will enhance their understanding of the seaside topic in a fun, hands-on way.
Creative opportunities continue all year through music, dance, and drama workshops – always a highlight for the children! One especially exciting moment is our themed Japan Day, where pupils bring their Geography learning to life in a vibrant and memorable way.
If you have any questions throughout the year, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher or myself. Thank you for visiting our Year 1 page, we look forward to sharing all the wonderful learning and fun that lies ahead!
