Nursery
Welcome to Highfield South Farnham Nursery
At Highfield South Farnham Nursery our mission is to give the children confidence and freedom of choice. We aim to ensure that each child has a smooth transition to Reception feeling happy and excited to learn and grow.
The Nursery is located in a large purpose-building with a large outside area with a separate planting garden. Both the inside and outside areas are available to the children as part of our free flow routine as they choose where they would like to explore. Our provision is enhanced in all areas to support the children’s characteristics of effective learning and interests. Allowing them free choice and opportunity to extend their play through open ended resources.
We aim to promote a love of learning through our Focus Story based planning approach which enables us to provide a language rich environment to support their communication and language. Our Phonics Steps programme has seen an increase in children’s confidence starting Phonics in Reception. The short, engaging sessions support children’s understanding and knowledge of Phase 1 phonics and teaches them how to tune into sounds, providing them with the skills needed to build a successful development of early reading.
We are also proud to offer a vast majority of extra-curricular activities throughout the week, these include Cookery, French, Woodland learning, Wriggly worms PE session and Music. Our aim is to enhance social skills, foster creativity and imagination, build fine and gross motor skills, co-ordination, learn new skills, develop confidence and self-esteem while learning new things.
We work in partnership with our parents and welcome them to many events throughout the year, including trip and activites in the local community.
In Nursery we:
- Understand that the Early Years are a crucial stage in terms of children's physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development.
- Work with parents to establish children's learning styles, interests and preferences, taking into consideration the children's existing knowledge and the needs of three- and four-year-olds when planning the curriculum.
- Encourage children to learn as they play by delivering a broad and balanced curriculum.
- Value every child's needs and abilities; understanding that every child is an individual and will learn differently.
- Lay the foundations for learning in literacy and mathematics. Thorough adult scaffolding, children’s play and developing curiosity.
- Help the children develop confidence and self-esteem ready to transition to school.

“The learning environment is bright, safe and highly stimulating. Inside and outside spaces are attractive, well-resourced and purposeful.”
“In the early years, the indoor and outdoor learning spaces are high quality. This supports children to develop their skills and knowledge across all areas of learning highly effectively.’’
“Children in the early years are prepared exceptionally well for the formal learning that follows. Staff work highly effectively together to provide rich learning experiences that enable children to thrive.”
“Children in the early year’s provision are extremely well prepared for key stage 1 learning. This is because of their consistently high-quality experience during both Nursery and the Reception Year.”
“Children engage incredibly well with their learning. They show themselves to be happy, confident and highly cooperative with each other. This was evident during a visit to the Nursery, where children waited patiently for their turn in the soft play area”
