September 2026 - Reception Starters Information
As a school, it is of the utmost importance that we set secure foundations for children’s lifelong learning, starting with their transition to Reception. We understand the importance of seeing the learning environments first-hand and acquainting yourself with the class teachers prior to your child starting school.
For this reason, on confirmation of your child's place, Highfield operates an induction afternoon and 'Learning Together' PEEP sessions, all prior to the summer holidays. We will also be operating a staggered start at the beginning of September for all Reception children.
Registration Form
All new parents will be sent an email with a link to our MCAS platform, this will include details on registration.
We also require a copy of your child's birth certificate (no originals please). These can be scanned into info.highfield@sfet.org.uk
PEEP sessions
We will be offering three morning sessions on Tuesday 9th June, Tuesday 16th June and Tuesday 23rd June where you and your child (younger siblings also welcome) can come and enjoy an hour of play, songs and stories. There will be examples of Reception learning experiences and we will discuss the Early Years curriculum with parents and carers, led by our Asssitant Headteacher who will be joined by the Reception team.
The sessions are based around the outstanding research of Professor Kathy Sylva and Dr Maria Evangelou at the University of Oxford (2004) – “The PEEP Learning Together Programme”, songs, rhymes and play for young children. Evidence shows, (Sylva and Evangelou - 2004), that children who engage in learning together with parents and carers are “more likely to have raised confidence and self-esteem and to become successful learners.”
These sessions will run from 9:00am until 10:00am each week and will be based in the school hall.
Once we have met all the children, we will then allocate your child to a class, either Penguins or Puffins. Reception runs as one cohort, where the children spend time across the classrooms and as a shared cohort outside.
There will also be the opportunity for your child to try on school uniform so you can ensure you have the correct size.
Induction session
Wednesday 1st July - Reception induction session - 1.30pm to 2.30pm
Your child will spend time in their new class and during this time our Assistant Headteacher who oversees Early Years will talk to you about various aspects of school life so that you have all the information needed to help your child settle in.
Uniform
Uniform samples will be available during the PEEP and induction sessions so that you can check sizing before ordering online.
Please note we hold a large amount of stock on site so items can be changed if necessary.
Please see uniform guidance for more information.
Start dates
To assist the settling in process, there will be three dates of entry as shown below. This means that the staff can give their full attention to each group of children and provide a gentle transition to their new environment.
Your child will start school according to their birthdate as follows:
Children born between 1st May 2022 and 31st August 2022 will start on Thursday 3rd September 2026
Children born between 1st January 2022 and 30th April 2022 will start on Monday 7th September 2026
